Entering Cambodia as a tourist requires a visa for most nationalities. You have two main pathways: apply for an electronic visa (eVISA) online before travel, or obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or land borders. Both options are legitimate and widely used by tourists. The choice depends on your travel timeline, preference for advance planning, and which border you'll use. This guide covers the processes, costs, validity terms, and practical considerations to help you select the right option and navigate the application or arrival process smoothly.
eVISA vs Visa-on-Arrival Process
An eVISA is an electronic travel authorization issued online by the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You complete an application form on the official portal, upload a digital passport photo and passport scan, pay the fee electronically, and receive the approval via email within 2–3 working days. You then print the eVISA and present it at entry. The eVISA can only be used at airports and a few major land crossings (Poipet from Thailand, Bavet from Vietnam). Visa-on-arrival is processed at the port of entry itself. You complete a form on paper, provide a passport photo, hand over your passport, and pay the fee in cash to an immigration officer. This typically takes 15–30 minutes at busy times. Visa-on-arrival is accepted at all official border checkpoints, including smaller land crossings. The main advantage of eVISA is predictability and no surprises at the border; you know your visa is approved before you arrive. Visa-on-arrival is more flexible if your travel plans are uncertain, though queues can be long during peak hours. Both documents are single-entry tourist visas unless you specifically request otherwise.
